Data Research Scientist


The Floow is currently recruiting experienced, driven, data focused Researchers.

Where others see mobile phones, vehicles or OBD dongles, The Floow sees tools that collate new data able to understand and transform mobility. The Floow researches new insights, services and applications concerning mobility and its safety risk by using wide, diverse and novel data.

The company has a history for leading market innovation and disruption based upon original data insights which it has been rewarded with a large range of high profile recognitions including the most prestigious global business innovation award, The Queen’s Award for Innovation. As well as being recognised for Innovation, The Floow are also recognised for advances in new markets, technology and new approaches to Road Safety. We currently work globally with top tier insurers, vehicle manufacturers, roadside assistance organisations alongside wider world leading industrial, academic and governmental research partners to explore new technologies and markets.

The Floow operates from its headquarters in Sheffield and is growing globally with new clients, areas of operation and people (currently around 100 people).


The research unit undertakes project based research to investigate new directions and areas for The Floow, with potential to impact the whole company and its future direction. The research unit builds from core telematics products and collated data to design and develop new capabilities, technology, improved services and new market areas.

The research unit strongly values innovation, coupled with great communication skills. You will need to collaborate with external research partners and internal teams in various research project work.

Our research unit undertakes wide project investigations both internally and in national and international R&D programs. The Floow research unit is currently engaged in leading research projects in various fields such as autonomous vehicles, smart cities and mobility data analytics as well as in core internal activities like risk understanding.

As a member of the research unit you will be expected to support research project work and its alignment to core business.


You will be responsible for ongoing research project activities including, but not limited to, the creation of prototypes, demonstrators, analytics and the production of reports. You will be encouraged to think out of the box to create novel algorithms, visualisations or services.

As part of the team you need to:

  • Be experienced with research programs.
  • Be passionate about delivering innovative solutions to get the most out of data.
  • Be at home working as part of a diverse but tightly knit system of teams, cooperating with all stakeholders- technical and non-technical, internal and external; communicating clearly and effectively.
  • Appreciate great design and understand the value of going a step beyond building something that merely works, to progress technology.
  • Be at home working in an agile fashion, collaborating closely, making pragmatic decisions, and have no problem adapting to rapidly evolving specifications.
  • Be keen to break new ground, and tackle problems that may not have been solved by anyone before you.


  • Proven track record of ability to quickly adapt to and exploit new and cutting-edge technology/ techniques
  • Experience with working directly on multi partner collaborative research projects in a technical domain
  • Experience of working with large data volumes
  • PhD qualification in a related subject
  • Knowledge of programming, and scripting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with using Data Analysis algorithms and statistical tools such as R or Python
  • Experience of Machine Learning or large scale modelling techniques


  • Knowledge of the transport, insurance or automotive sectors
  • Proven track record of involvement in complex applications
  • Experience with UNIX / LINUX command line and other programming languages (e.g. C++, Java, Python)
  • Experience in presenting research results
