How The Floow’s Team Promote a Charitable Culture Across the Company

At The Floow, we’re committed to giving back to our local community as well as supporting nationwide charities to help the people who need it most. From coffee mornings to marathons, The Floow’s team have never shied away from an opportunity to help others where they can.

Over the years, a number of our colleagues have embarked on different challenges to raise money for causes close to their hearts, including:

  • QA Engineer, Abby Sawyer, who completed several challenges in 2017, including the Yorkshire Marathon and the Great North Run, raising over £600 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital
  • One of our Android Developers, who ran the Sheffield Half Marathon and raised £413.75 for SHARE (Sheffield Health Action Resource for Ethiopia)
  • Sam Chapman, our Chief Innovation Officer and Co-Founder, who spent a night sleeping rough to raise £580 for the Cathedral Archer Project, a Sheffield-based charity that supports homeless people and offers services and activities to boost their independence and wellbeing

In September 2018 our internal Charity Committee was created and since then we’ve raised over £1,320.37 and organised 6 different fundraising events.

Our first event was a Macmillan Coffee Morning which we hosted in the basement of our HQ in Sheffield. We set up tea and coffee stations and filled the room with cakes, buns, pastries and biscuits which were kindly baked and donated by our staff. Everyone enjoyed an hour of socialising together and in total we raised £227.79 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

In November, employees from around the business donated toys, clothes, school supplies and hygiene items for the Samaritans Operation Christmas Child appeal. We managed to pack all of the donations into 19 shoeboxes which were sent to children in critical need in Belarus.

Some of our team also took part in Movember last year, raising a grand total of £580. The funds went to The Movember Foundation which addresses some of the biggest health issues faced by men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

In December we saw the return of our much loved Christmas Jumper Day! The Charity Committee organised a raffle and raised £187 for Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice. A representative of Bluebell Wood recently visited The Floow’s HQ to personally thank the whole team for their generosity. Since then we’ve also established a tuck shop in our Sheffield office with all donations going to the Hospice, in its first week we raised over £45!

At the end of December, a Sheffield perinatal mental health and emotional support group, Light, held a Christmas fundraiser and we were able to sponsor the Welcome Drinks at their event, where they managed to raise £1,004 during the course of the evening. These funds allow Light to offer support to women and families, both pre and post-pregnancy.

Outside of the office, a large number of our staff are also keen to give their time. Many people volunteer for a whole range of good causes, including fundraising for Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and supporting ArtWorks, a South Yorkshire creative arts organisation that inspires and helps adult with learning disabilities to develop important life skills through creative workshops and placements.

Our latest internal Charity Committee event was Basement Bingo at our Sheffield HQ at the end of February where we raised £238. There was food, drinks and prizes throughout the night and all proceeds went towards sponsoring The Floow and our long-term partner, Direct Line Group, in an upcoming Sprintathon, to raise money for Mind and Stand Up To Cancer.

We’ve achieved so much in the space of 6 months, and what’s even more amazing is the collaboration between different people across the business. Our Charity Committee sees members of our HR, Design, Client Development and Driver Coaching teams coming together to organise and plan all of these events.

It’s amazing to see the generosity of all of our team and whilst our mission is to make mobility safer and smarter for everyone through our products and services, the charity culture at The Floow is also helping to raise funds and awareness for good causes up and down the country.
