DataFloow: How telematics and IoT is changing the future of mobility

DataFloow allows us to harness the power of sensors and software to provide information to positively impact the future of mobility

The Internet of Things (IoT) was developed to utilise a large number of sensors, in a variety of environments or attached to everyday activities, in order to make positive improvements to almost any area of everyday life and society - from health and social care to mobility and traffic management.

Telematics is one significant example of this and at The Floow, we believe that the proliferation of sensors allows us to collect valuable data which can provide us with the information and insights we require to make a positive difference to the future of mobility for the benefit of all road users.

We have six years of experience in the telematics field working with insurance clients across five continents delivering telematics solutions for the benefit of them and their policyholders.

The journey and vehicle data we collect from a variety of devices, including black boxes and by using the smartphone as powerful mobility sensor, is anonymised, analysed and scored against a number of areas, including speed and smoothness of driving, providing us, the insurer and the driver with unique insights into driver behaviour.

Our work in the sector has seen us recognised as experts in realising the power of the Internet of Things to provide solutions that are of significant benefit in the real world. However, some of the anonymised data we collect isn’t useful to our insurance clients but can be used to help power new services as it provides useful insights into other areas of mobility.

This is where our DataFloow suite of services comes in. DataFloow takes our anonymised mass market data collected from vehicles and mobile sensors and it allows us to see a unique picture of road and transport patterns which can help relevant organisations and governments plan for the future of mobility - from autonomous vehicles to smart cities.

The opportunity to observe these driving behaviours gives us strong insights and important information that can help with traffic modelling, traffic management, long term strategic planning and the optimisation of mobility.

The data collected from sensors presents a much more representative, detailed and timely view of behaviour across any region and over much longer periods of time. It also gives us a very accurate picture of mobility as the information it collects is not limited to fixed points which can be expensive to place and maintain across the road network.

By working with a number of organisations, the anonymised data we have at our fingertips can make the world a safer and smarter place for drivers, ranging from the use of telematics based insurance policies to the ability to inform the future of road and traffic infrastructure itself.

We see DataFloow as an important contributor to the future of mobility by making use of the vast amounts of anonymised data we collect daily to positively impact traffic management, road planning and road safety. And this is critical to our mission of making mobility safer and smarter for everyone.
