The Floow Appoints Jonathan Smith as Head of Data Science

The Floow - May 16th, 2017

Leading telematics firm The Floow has appointed Jonathan Smith to take on the role of Head of Data Science.

The move sees him join from the UK’s leading personal motor and home insurer, Direct Line Group (DLG), where he was Head of Telematics Pricing.

With more than seven years’ experience specifically in the telematics arena, and having read Engineering and Computer Science at Cambridge University, Jonathan will now take an active role in leading the firm’s development of new and innovative telematics-based risk models and scores.

Commenting on his appointment he said: “I was closely linked with The Floow during my time at Direct Line Group, and so I am familiar with their ethos, their ways of working and their unrivalled passion for harnessing sensors, software and data in pursuit of smarter and safer mobility for all.

“Moving forward I am very much looking forward to drawing on my experience client-side to further strengthen the firm’s capability to deliver timely and robust propositions that are underpinned by industry leading analytics.”

The latest announcement for the firm follows hot on the heels of its recent £13m equity investment news – a funding boost that will enable it to double its technical team in the coming months.

Chief Operations Officer for The Floow, David James, said: “We are delighted to welcome Jonathan to our management team in his capacity as Head of Data Science.

“As a business we continue to strive to attract talented individuals that are not only committed to helping us grow and expand our operations, but also to ensuring that we continue delivering the insurance industry’s best predictive analytics and enriching end user experience to the point of mass market adoption.

“Jonathan’s experience developing driver scores is further complemented by his unique client perspective garnered from his former in-house role, and so he has a real understanding of how to identify, articulate and then tackle the issues and challenges that clients face when managing their new telematics propositions.”

During his time with Direct Line Group Jonathan deployed telematics scores into traditional insurance risk models and market facing rates, and his appointment sees him relocate from South London to Sheffield where The Floow has its headquarters.
